red-headed woodpecker

Even with bird-feeding, the Red-headed Woodpecker is declining in numbers throughout its range due to habitat loss, which includes open woods and tree cavities available for nesting. Bird-feeding cannot help every bird, and it may actually inhibit others. European Starlings, non-native birds have taken over tree cavities for nesting and readily come to feeders.

NEWS FROM NATURE

Is feeding birds good or bad?

Nearly half the housesholds in the United States feed birds, spending at least $2 billion annually on this hobby. Though more research needs to be done, the most recent literature offers some food for thought.

  • Feeding birds affects the ecology and population distribution of some birds. For example, the Northern Cardinal did not live as far north as Illinois 100 years ago. Today, partially due to feeding, it's a very common bird statewide.

  • Feeding birds can have negative impacts, such as the transmission of disease in birds that feed in flocks. One example is the House Finch, an introduced species in the Midwest. An eye disease in this species spread more quickly because of bird feeding.

  • Bird feeding can help certain common birds, such as the Black-capped Chickadee survive the winter, and even produce more young in spring.

  • Be aware that bird feed not only attracts our avian friends, but also other creatures, such as raccoons and skunks, which can become a nuisance.

  • Bird feeding is not intrinsically wrong or right, but it does require some thought by those who like to attract birds to their yards by offering supplemental nourishment. Keep your feeders (and bird baths) clean to prevent disease, and choose food wisely. Enjoy the show!

  • Read reputable sources about the pros and cons of bird feeding. You might find an interview with two veterinarians about bird feeding interesting.
